Interview: RIPTORN

1. A few weeks ago you guys opened for Deicide, could you explain that experience & the feeling you felt for opening for such a legendary band?

Colbert:"It was a bittersweet experience. We've recently lost Jay (Robinson, former bassist of Riptorn) and we debated whether we should play the show. Ultimately, we decided it was the right things to do, and and we feel that Jay would agree.Deicide's been a driving force for brutal death metal, and sharing the stage with them was something else! The fans responded well, and we loved their energy!"

2. Recently Riptorn has to seen out a new bassist due to tragic events, was it an instant decision to add Daniel Santana to the line up?

Colbert: "Pretty much Daniel's been a veteran of the scene for a long time,  and his chops are dynamite. Honestly, we were surprised he stepped up and expressed how much of a fan he is of our music. He's always easy to get along with, picks up new material quickly and has proven himself as a driving force behind our creativity. We're excited to see what the future holds with him holding down the low-end."

3. When When writing the material for the EP what was the biggest influence?

Colbert: "Our focus is on the total package. When we write material, we don't focus so much on writing a particular hook, blazing lead or a particular beat. Brad(Jones) and Ben(Salzgeber) and jam riffs, come up with most of the song, then Keenan(Womble) adds his beats along the way. I'll occasionally offer some suggestions along the way, but usually write lyrics after the finished product comes out."

4. Lyrically do you guts aim for goofy somewhat random stuff??

Colbert: "Yeah because a lot of musicians take themselves too seriously. We want people to have fun at our shows. We want people to laugh and have a good time. I never expect anyone to have an emotional epiphany over my lyrics. If they like it , and they think we're fun, then they're more likely to bring their friends and family out. Spreading the love, one headbange at a time."

5. "Could you please describe Riptorn's sound for those whom may not be familiar with the band?

Colbert: "We're an odious mixture of thrash, hardcore, black, punk and doom. With a touch of fried Southern goodness. We're not trying to toe any particular musical  line. If it sounds good we rock it."

6. Are the fellas of Riptorn thinking of anything full length?

Colbert: "Absolutely! We're currently finishing two new songs, and hope to have to have a full length album completed by early to mid 2013."

7. If you could tell your fans one thing about Riptorn that no one else knows what would that one thing be?

Keenan(Womble): "I would like them to know that their drummer (me lol) does play with a disability. I do have prosthetic hips. I was sidelined for 3 years due to a vascular Necrosis and was determined to come back to do what I enjoy

Ben(Colbert): "I sang "Living La Vida Loca: with choreographed stage dancers in front of a packed cruise ship music hall."

Brad(Jones): "We used to be called Final Thoughts"

Benjamin(Salzgeber): "Much of my spare time is spent slaying zombies, mostly C.O.D (Call of Duty: Black Ops)"

Daniel Santana: " Sadly I'm the new guy in the band and I have nothing to say yet.... But I can tell you that I love these motherfuckers in a non fag way."

8.How do you feel about the bands progress?is it going at the pace you wish? Or would you prefer it to quicken?

Colbert: "We always produce material faster, but we also understand its about quality material. We'd much rather spend more time getting it right, than writing twenty songs of mediocre crap. If our fan reaction is any indication, I'd say we've got the right formula.
