How often does one
actually sit & contemplate the manner in which a band formed
their name? If it was something plucked from the sky, or kind of
just fell into their laps. Does it have personal meaning? Did it
take months to decide? I've heard many different stories of how these
underground bands of FL got their names and thought it would be
awesome to share them with you the readers, fans, and fellow bands.
Who know and love them so. Enjoy my music minions.
SLEDGEGRINDER- Brad
Blasama (Guitarist)https://www.facebook.com/SledgegrindeR
“We
really wanted to make-up a name that no one already used so we
basically wrote down a bunch of words and starting combining them
together. Originally I started it with sledge grind demise but we
thought it was a little lengthy so we started messin with that
foundation and ended up with SLEDGEGRINDER(smiley face)”
“Well,
it was actually just one of those open a dictionary and point kinda
things. We never thought at the time the band would come so far or we
would have tried to think of something a little more clever. So we're
pretty much stuck with it now.haha It's not too terribly exciting of
a story but i guess the name has gone on to mean a lot to us because
of all the great friends, fans, family, and good times that are now
forever associated with what it represents.”
“Effigy
means a representation or image.
Distorted means unclear.
So An
Effigy Distorted means an unclear image.
This name can be applied
to literally anything especially since everyone has their own
opinions. The best way we can describe it is that alot of people say
that it takes no talent to play metal music. Their view, their image,
on metal music is unclear because they do not like it, making it an
effigy distorted.”
Okay,
simple The Toilets is a metaphor for how Brett, Rob and I feel. The
Toilet is most often looked upon with disgust, yet everyone uses one.
We take everyones shit, piss and puke and faithfully stay there. If
people were asked what ten mordern conveniences they'd absolutely
have to keep I could promise you less than 10% would say toilet. The
Toilets are a state of mind, and just like when you flush everything
that's in the bowl combines, much like how we genre mash and make
unique music. I honestly challenge anyone to find a band that sounds
like us, it just won't happen. You can hear little tinges and
influences, but the final product is unique, bizarre and beautiful.
We are Toilets...Filthy, rotten, disgusting but everyone uses us and
would be up "shits creek" without us.
TUG-
DANNY JOHNSON (Vocals)
https://www.facebook.com/TugMusic
“Well,
I wish there some elaborate explanation for it but....sadly there
isn't. Lol"
"It was basically formed out of the need for simplicity.
Tony's old band was called quite simply 'Something Simple'. So when
we were discussing potential band names we knew we didn't want some
stupid, long and drawn out name that reflected how "deep &
dark" the band members were because, of course, we are neither.
Haha! So after tossing around ancient Greek words and other bullshit
someone (I think Tony) threw out TUG. We were like "YES!".
People always ask us what TUG stands for. We have the same answer
every time. Nothing. We wanted something short, powerful and easy to
remember. So there it is.”

Well,
as we all know an (N)ception is a beginning. A start. The thing that
attracted me to this name was that anyone can relate to a start.
People move new places to "start fresh" people change
things about their lives to "start over" basically we do
things to hit a "non existent reset button" So that is
where the main idea for (N)ception began for us. Another tid bit of
information is this band has been around for 8 years under the name
"Scorned" we went through many line up changes to the point
where no one who was in the original incarnation of Scorned is in the
band. So our first album was going to be called Inception because it
was the beginning for us, the start for us to put our stuff out there
and continue up from there. Well complications arose and that album
was never completed... So we all made it back together (me being the
final piece of the puzzle) in December of 2011. We played one show
out still under the name "Scorned" and just decided that it
was time for a change... (N)ception was born. The parenthesis came
from an idea that I always had locked away since we name our album
that, I still have doodles in my lyric book of the first time I drew
it. I introduced it to my band and we decided to roll with it because
it was something to stand out and something that we felt that we can
market... basically something memorable. So here we are at the middle
of 2012. We have started production on our first full length album
"...A Letter of (N)tent" which should be out the first
quarter of 2013 if the end of the world doesn't come(smiley face)
ANOTHER
LIFE SPARED- Will D Hayes (Vocals), Jennifer Perez (Vocals), Greg
Moir (Rhythm Guitar), Dillon Tuttle (Lead Guitar), Kevin Ruffo
(Drums)https://www.facebook.com/AnotherLifeSpared
"The
band was originally called All Is Lost back in 2010. At the time, we
were running through EP titles and the name Another Life Spared came
up and we thought it would be cool to have a dichotomy effect with
the name All Is Lost. Some time had passed, and the name All Is Lost
started to look really dim and tasteless. It didn’t stand out and
draw attention. So we decided it was time to change the band name to
something a little less cliché’. The name Another Life Spared came
back up in conversation as a possible band name. It was laughed off
at first, but once we started bringing it up more and more it started
to stick. It stood out, it was easy to remember, and it grabbed
people’s attention. And it still kept the dichotomy effect with the
seemingly upbeat band name Another Life Spared vs. the dark song
themes and lyrics. Eventually, we all agreed that Another Life Spared
was a really good match for us and the name was set."
CONTORED-
COBY KOCH (Vocals)https://www.facebook.com/contortedmetal
“Ok,
3 of the founding members of Brutality wanted to keep jamming after
Brutality had broken up. This included Pete Sykes (Guitar) Jim Coker
(Drums) and Ed Webb. I am not certain but I believe Ed was on guitar
as well. They were sitting around trying to think of a name that
wasn't too cliche or shitty. Contorted was one of them. Pete's
brother Sam had come up with an early version of the logo. Everyone
seemed to like it so it stuck. Shortly after the logo was changed a
bit to be what it is now.”
“We
got out band name one day i was standing in the kitchen and its was
kinda cool out and I said man Falls is Upon Us and Carlos said holy
shit that sounds awesome. We had probably a list of 100 names and
they all sucked so we rolled with Falls Upon Us.”
FIRES
OF GAMORRAH- MICKEY BEILMAN (Guitarist)https://www.facebook.com/firesofgomorrah
“Well
there wasn't a whole lot to the naming. I had come up with it a while
back and sorta threw it out there when we formed the band. It's not
so much a religious reference either. More like a powerful force
wiping an entire existence from the earth. Like a cleansing fire I
guess. It has a bit of a personal meaning to me cause I was raised
pretty religious and though my views are very different than
traditional beliefs I still have my beliefs. I also don't ever cram
it down people's throats or bring it up. They are my own
views...
That's pretty much the general background behind it.”
“Foreshadow
has been a name for a band I have been wanting to form since 1997.
But I wasn't able to finally realize that goal until 2008. The name
comes from literature. It means the foretelling of things to come. I
felt that name was the best way to describe the writing style of the
band.”
its
from a cartoon on nickelodeon call "Ahhh real monsters" we
all use to watch it and decided on that character as our fav and band
name We didn't have a band name for like 4 months.
LET
ME DRIVE- TIMOTHY SMITHLER (Vocals & Guitar)
“Let
Me Drive started out as a programming term and turned into much more
than that. It was the spring semester of 2011 and I (Tim) was taking
Processes of Object Oriented Design at UCF. It required me to
basically create a supposedly big piece of online software. I heard
it the first time coming from my professor who was younger than both
me and Ross. She said it in a way that made it sound as if you were
to rescue something that was falling apart, not necessarily by force,
but in a way of helping one another out in a team. At that time all I
really knew Ross for was we lived in the same complex and took some
of the same computer courses together. He helped me code what was
called “TroubleBubbles.com” and during the entire time we
switched back in forth on our computers saying let me drive. On
another note, it was also a way to help each other out as far as
drinking goes and taking a responsible designated driver with you. In
even another sense, Ross and his current girlfriend living with him
at the time broke up and it wasn’t pretty. So I rented a U-Haul and
Ross let me drive to a new place for him to live. Essentially, we
make it stand for more than just a term for us nerds to throw back
and forth, we provide a more descriptive meaning towards Let Me Drive
in helping with relationships, friendships, hard times, good times,
and of course, music.”
PROPHACY
Z14- DAN PROPHACY ZXIV (Vocals & Guitar)
“Well
actually it comes from the bible, Zechariah 14:12 "And this
shall be the plague wherewith Jehovah will smite all the peoples that
have warred against Jerusalem: their flesh shall consume away while
they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in
their sockets, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth."
Possibly the most metal passage ever, and a blatant proof of the
hypocrisy of the bible (smiley face) Also if you look at the new
living rendition it reads "And the LORD will send a plague on
all the nations that fought against Jerusalem. Their people will
become like walking corpses, their flesh rotting away. Their eyes
will rot in their sockets, and their tongues will rot in their
mouths." which is basically describing a holy zombie apocalypse
lmao! Either way, we thought it was extremely metal \m/ plus all the
good names were taken lol (And it is Prophecy Z14, Facecrook is just
too stupid to allow numbers in our names)”
RIPTORN
got it's name from the actor Rip Torn. You've seen him in Men in
Black, The Larry Sanders Show, and Robocop 3. However his pivotal
role, the one that inspired us, was as James Brody in "Freddy
Got Fingered". He was the annoyed old man in us all who only
wants his boy to grow up and move out, and get a real goddamn job!
But for real though, we named ourselves RIPTORN because we LOVE that
movie and just saying his name makes us laugh. So there it is, the
story of the Torn. thank you.
THE
BROWN GOOSE- MIKE INGRAM (Guitar)
“In
Tallahassee there was this huge boom of jokes amongst our group of
friends about anal sex that all stemmed from one kid named Cody
Medley...Cody is the most inappropriate, way too shitfaced terribly
out of line kid youll ever meet and somehow everyone loved his jokes.
Somewhere along the way he started saying brown all the time when
talkin about anal sex (oh shes down with the brown? she likes brown
stuff? she was giving you head and stuck her finger in ur
brown?!,etc.) While this band was forming and we were thinkin of a
name, we were always serious about the music side but as a joke
Pat(bassist) was like we should call our band The Brown
Experience.... we all thought it was hilarious and then we looked at
my crazy ass chocolate lab named Goose layin on the floor and we were
like wait what if were the brown GOOSE experience? so we dont have to
explain the truth behind this band name. After playing a show as the
brown goose EXPERIENCE we decided to drop the experience part since
we didnt wanna sound like we were copying jimi hendrix and how he
called his band Jimi Hendrix Experience. it was still kind of a joke
when we started playing shows, then ppl really liked us and started
booking us by that name and we were like well shit we cant change it
now lol”
